Rivera It is a notion that has its origin in the Latin word rivus, which can be translated as "creek" . It's about a reduced flow from Water that flows continuously through a channel.

It can be said, therefore, that Rivera is a synonym for stream (a stream of low flow water whose subsistence depends on the season and rainfall). Not to be confused rivera (written with V ) with bank (B ), term that refers to the shore or the margin of a body of water.

Usually the current of water from the river flows continuously; however, it differs from the river in that its flow is low and, as mentioned in the previous paragraph, it can be exhausted in stations where it does not rain enough, or when the heat is excessive. If its flow is usually very poor and the presence of water, very sporadic, the use of the terms "rambla" or "torrent" is preferred, rather than Rivera Creek or stream.

In the work entitled "Dictionary of geographical terms", by the author F. J. Monkhouse, the term stream is defined with the following three meanings (remember that Rivera can be considered one of its synonyms): flow of water of little extension, normally continuous, and channel through which it passes; in America, a small river, although wide enough for regular size ships to navigate; in certain arid regions of Latin America, "Rambla".

The rivera, in this sense, can count on a ejection cone , a drainage channel and one reception basin , especially in its course by a mountain. Let's see a small definition of these concepts:

* reception basin : Its about course upper body of water. It is the point of origin or the collection area, in this case of the riverbank, that directs it towards the drainage channel and looks similar to that of a funnel. In the reception basin, erosion over sedimentation and transport is predominant;

* drainage channel : As can be deduced from the previous definition, it is the middle course. Water advances at high speeds due to its pronounced pending , and transports the remains of the erosion produced in the reception basin, something that in turn derives in that other materials of the channel are torn off and dragged along the riverbank. Its channel is usually narrow;

* ejection cone : is the low course of the riverbank and is also known as fan. The slope is abruptly interrupted, which results in a weakening of the waters and the deposit of materials That this one dragged. At this point, the riverbank is divided into several arms and this gives the typical triangular shape of the cone.

The notion of Rivera also allows you to name various places. Rivera is the name of cities or villages in Argentina (in the province of The Pampa ), Colombia (department of Huila ), Uruguay (in the department of the same name) and Switzerland (canton of Ticino )
