Before entering fully into the meaning of the term chicken we will know its etymological origin. In this case, we can underline that it is a word that derives from Latin, specifically “hen”, which is what is called the female of the rooster (“gallus”).

It is called chicken yet bird which is part of the order of the species galliformes , characterized by its short and somewhat curved beak, its wings also short and sturdy legs. The hens, whose feathers are lustrous, have a fleshy crest of reddish color.

The term is usually used as a synonym for rooster , although the male is usually called a cock and the female of the species whose scientific name is Gallus gallus domesticus . Comparing the two, the chicken is smaller and has a smaller crest than the rooster.

Of the domestic chickens, it should be noted that they can be found in all corners of the world, which fly very badly unlike other birds, which are animals that have a clear hierarchy between them and that have become a species that has come to form fundamental part of the feeding of the human being. And this is that they provide eggs and also provide their meat.

There are many breeds of chickens, which usually live between five and ten years. They are omnivorous animals that cluck, emitting a sound similar to "Cló-cló". In the case of roosters (males), they also sing ("Quiquiriquí"). On the other hand, the hen has a capacity to flight limited, although it is able to move to somewhat elevated sites when it is in danger.

Chickens are usually raised by man to take advantage of his meat and their eggs . It is common for chickens to lay an egg daily for eight, nine or ten days. After laying, the bird is responsible for incubating it, giving it heat and rotating it until the time of hatching (which occurs about twenty-one days after laying).

In the same way, we cannot ignore that there is a traditional game that bears in its name the word that occupies us. We are referring to the blind chicken, in which the desired players can participate. It basically consists of the fact that one of the participants, blindfolded, must try to catch the others. And for this you will have to make special use of senses such as the ear.

It is precisely very famous a painting by Francisco de Goya that represents the development of this game and is entitled "The Blind Hen". He painted it between 1788 and 1792, after Carlos IV arrived at the throne, and intended to decorate with him the room of the infantas in the Palace of El Pardo.

In a symbolic sense, the notion of chicken is used to qualify an individual fearful or scary . By example : "Don't be a chicken and go claim what is yours!", “Esteban is a good boy, but a little chicken”, “When Pedro started yelling at him, Ramiro's chicken was silent”.
